LO1, LO2 unit test corrections

3. What potential legal issues will need to be addressed? Outline briefly the impact each one     may have on the project and how they might be dealt with. (8)

The legal issues that will need to be addressed for this project include consent (permission) forms for the children who will be acting in the project, it is absolutely essential that these are signed, as, without them the children cannot work at all. Similarly as they are under 18 the working hours need to be agreed and put in a written contract so that the rest of the project can work around the timings of the young children. Another potential legal issue is the locations that filming will take place, if it is in a public area, council permission is generally needed, however if it is privately owned land then the owner must sign the location release form. Finally, the project must also make sure there are no copyright issues when using other people's content. For example, in order to use background music that someone else has written requires you to request the rights for its use in the advert, otherwise the advert may be pulled after it is released.

4. Produce a mind map or mood board exploring how the age of the target audience will impact the design/content of the video. (5)

(mind map points)

  • based on the fact that the video will be accessed via a website, the thumbnail and title will need to be equally as eye-catching as the product. A way to do this would be to use bright, happy colours that young children would be drawn to, such as the primary colours (red, yellow, blue). Primary colours are beneficial as they are soft and easy for the young, human eye to focus on.
  • The filming location is important as it should show how the shoes benefit the children and the full use of the shoes. For example, using the shoes in muddy areas to show how they protect their feet. Similarly the location must also be somewhere safe and secure, where young children would often hang out, as it is going to encourage them to go to those places, such as, a playground or a park. This is particularly important, as even though the primary audience is 8-14 years old, the secondary target audience is their parents, so the advert should also appeal to them as they are the ones buying the shoes.
  • The narrative of the video should be short and the story line should be light hearted, with minimal adult themes as it is to appeal to 8-14 year olds. Similarly it should focus more on the visuals of the video rather than what is being said.
  • The music used in the video should be upbeat and modern to appeal to the primary target audience. Showing the children wearing the shoes with an upbeat background music will make the children watching want to have the shoes and also listen to the music in their free time.
  • The genre of the video should be simple, showing how the shoes can give you popularity at school if you wear them. The aim of the video is to appeal to the primary audience as they will then go to their parents please can I have these shoes and will try and sell how good the shoes are to their parents.
5. Identify two costs associated with filming the advert for Zoo Shoes and explain how these costs impact on the project (4)

One cost that could impact the project would be catering costs, as the cast and crew are working for long hours it is beneficial to serve food for them. This is particularly important as the cast are young children, they need food to keep their energy up. Another, is being aware that as the cast of the video are young, they cannot work long hours in a day, and so filming may take longer, which means that if you hired anything or anyone, or are using public areas, the costs will go up as you will need them for a longer period of time.

(Any of these costs:
  • Video equipment hire – key project cost, can’t be run without, need to hire
  • Private venue hire – possibly use public area, if private venue too expensive
  • Catering costs – must feed the children and crew, particularly if filming long days over short period of time
  • Transport for cast and crew – children can’t drive so may need transport or mileage paid, try to find a venue that is not too far away!
  • Editing suite – hourly rate, this is needed for pre-production
  • Music – must pay for rights
  • Director – decide on unknown or well known director – more money for a more experienced director – maybe need one with experience of working with children
  • Camera operator, lighting, sound – dependent on how experienced they are, they will cost more
  • Script writer – as this is a promotional video it may need a short narrative, or may choose to do a music video style promo video
  • Any other sensible and relevant idea)
6. What market research could be done to learn more about Zoo Shoes, and what is one outcome of this market research? (3)

One method of market research that could be done is a questionnaire, including both quantitative and qualitative questions to find out how much people would pay for the shoes. By doing a questionnaire it will highlight if there are any gaps in the market, the clear needs and wants of the target audience as well as just finding out a general opinion of the product as a means of improvement.

7. Identify one type of project management tool that you could use to keep track of the project tasks and explain why it is suitable for this project. (3)

One type of project management that you could use is Microsoft excel to make a Gantt chart. As you can clearly lay out all the tasks that need to be done, and state whether the task is complete, incomplete or not yet done. This is useful for this project as the Gantt chart can be accessed by all the crew members via the internet and updates automatically for everyone, and so all the crew members area aware of the project progress without having crew meetings. By having less crew meetings it allows for more filming time even though the hours are shortened when filming with children. ( tight time scale, large production team)

8. The film needs to be tested before it is sent to the client for approval. Outline what type of research this is and how you could go about completing this research. (3)

This type of research is called using a focus group of the same age as the target audience to find out how successful the video is in raising sales of the project. You could go about this research by offering a small amount of money or a free pair of shoes to those who are willing to participate. By using a focus group it will produce market research results that will highlight any faults in the advert that can be improved upon before it is released.
